Lip Enhancement Injections are Rising in Popularity February 27, 2013

lip enhancement2012 was another banner year for the cosmetic and plastic surgery industry. The overall performance of plastic surgery procedures was up 5% from 2011. Procedures like breast augmentation were still at the top of the list, followed by facial rejuvenation treatments, both surgical, such as face lifts or eyelid surgery, and non-invasive like Botox. While many of the common treatments continued to thrive, one lesser used treatment is finding resurgence among younger women. Lip augmentation is seeing an uptick in popularity among women in their 20’s, according to a story published on, an ABC affiliate.

Lip augmentation is the process of filling out the lips to give them a fuller looking appearance. This can be achieved through surgery, but the most common method is through injections. There are a variety of “fillers” used to achieve the desired results from a lip augmentation. Some of the most common fillers are:

  • COLLAGEN: Prepared from the collagen found in the skin of cows, this filler is purified and used as natural filler for lips. For some people, a sensitivity test is recommended before moving forward with collagen injections. Collagen is absorbed by the body naturally so results last between one and three months on average.
  • FAT: When using a fat transfer as a filler in lip augmentation, the fat is harvested from another area of the body, most often the tummy or thighs where fat is most prevalent. The fat is then purified for use as a lip filler. The biggest advantage of this method is that because the fat comes from the patient’s own body, there is no risk for allergic reaction. Like collagen, the results are temporary, lasting only slightly longer than collagen injections.
  • HYALURONIC ACID FILLERS: Hyaluronic acid is a material that is found naturally in the body. Over time, these levels can fade, contributing to a lack of volume particularly in the face. There are many types of fillers that use a hyaluronic base, such as Restylane and Juvederm. These treatments are absorbed into the body like fat or collagen, but tend to have longer lasting results. The effect of hyaluronic acid fillers can last up to a year.

In the past, lip augmentation injections were most popular among people as they aged, as part of their facial rejuvenation treatments. With the advent of video chatting, digital photography and photo sharing becoming so prevalent, our faces are more visible than ever. These factors, along with celebrities such as Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian seeking lip enhancement, may be responsible for some of the spike in lip augmentation demand.

Lip injections are non-invasive procedures that may seem like small changes, but adding volume to one’s lips can change a lot.
